2003

During my first PHD period, I investigated the following research issues in the database research field: XML indexing and query processing; Webhousing and Web personalization; and pattern management.

Concerning XML indexing, I put my effort in studing indexing techniques supporting semi-structured data query processing. In particular, I studied some indexing techniques supporting XML documents processing.

During 2002 and 2003, I participated to the CLICKWORLD project, an industrial research project aimed at building a Web proactive
personalization system capable to tailor Web pages on user preferences. In the context of this project, I designed and implemented the webhouse, supporting the management of knowledge extracted from users navigation observations, on ORACLE platform.

Pattern management is the topic of my PhD thesis. Patterns are concise, but rich in semantic, representation of data (data mining results, multimedia features,Web structural information,etc.). Concerning this issue, I partecipated to the PANDA (Patterns for Next-generation DAtabase systems) project. PANDA is an European Project, laying the foundations of pattern modeling and investigating the main issues in pattern querying and management in order to state the basic requirements of a Pattern-Based Management System. In the context of PANDA, I contributed to formalize the proposal of a unified logical model for representing heterogeneous patterns. Furthermore, I worked on languages for pattern manipulation and querying. Finally, I investigated the potentiality of using a pattern based management system to manage knowledge concerning user navigation observations, as that considered in the context of the CLICKWORLD project.

Presently, I am a member of the program committee of the "IADIS International Conference" WWW/Internet 2004, and of the scientific committee of the "International Workshop on Database Technologies for Handling XML information on the Web" (DataX'04).

Furthermore, I reviewed papers for the "Int’l Workshop on Pattern Representation and Management (PaRMa’04)"

2004

During this year I was mainly devoted to study pattern management issue, which is the topic of my PhD thesis. Essentially, I worked on logical and theoretical aspects. Expecially, I worked on the formalization  of the logical model for representing heterogeneous patterns and I have extended such a model with temporal management characteristics. Furthermore, I worked on languages for patterns. I have proposed the pattern manipulation language and an algebraic approach for the pattern query language. Both of them have been extended with the possibility to deal with temporal information associate with patterns according to the temporal model proposed. Actually, I am working on the definition of a calculus for the pattern querying. As a background work, the literature has been analyzed in order to study other proposals dealing with pattern management issue.

Presently, I am a member of the program committee of the "IADIS International Conference" WWW/Internet 2004, and  "1st International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies " WEBIST 2005.

Furthermore, I reviewed papers for the "International Workshop on Database Technologies for Handling XML information on the Web (DataX'04)", "Int. Workshop on Clustering Information over the Web (ClustWeb'04)", "Sixth International Conference on Information Integration and Web Based Applications & Services (IIWAS 2004)", and " Database Systems for Advanced Applications (DASFA 2005)".

Moreover,  I attended the Seventh EDBT Summer School on XML and Databases, Santa Margherita di Pula (CG), Italy.

2005

During this year I complete the study of several formal aspects concerning pattern management. Especially, I worked on query languages for patterns. I have proposed an algebra and a calculus for pattern querying and I have analysed some theoretical issues concerning their expressive power and computational complexity. Moreover, during this last year I have devoted many efforts in designing a prototype system implementing a pattern based management system according to the logical model and to languages for patterns I have proposed. Such a prototype system has been demonstrated at the "31th International Conference on Very Large Data Base (VLDB 2005)".

Presently, I am a member of the program committee of the "IADIS International Conferences WWW/Internet 2005 and Applied Computing 2006",  "International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies " WEBIST 2006, and "International Workshop on Database Technologies for Handling XML information on the Web (DataX'06)" - in conjunction with EDBT'2006.

Furthermore, I reviewed papers for the "10th Pacific-Asia Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD 2006)", "9th International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases (SSTD 2005)", "International Conference on Extending Database Technology (EDBT)", "International Journal of Cooperative Information Systems (IJCIS)", and "Processing and Managing Complex Data for Decision Support", J.Darmont and O.Boussaid, editors, Idea Group, Inc.

2006

On May, 31 2006, I defended my PhD thesis "A Unified Framework for Heterogeneous Pattern Management" and I got my PhD in Computer Science.

Presently, I am a member of the program committee of the "IADIS International Conferences WWW/Internet 2006 and Applied Computing 2006-2007",  "International Conference on Web Information Systems and Technologies " WEBIST 2007, and "Information Resources Management Association International Conference" IRMA 2007

Furthermore, I reviewed papers for the following international conferences: DEXA 06 and ADBIS2006; and for the following International Journal: Data & Knowledge Engineering, Information Sciences, and International Journal of Web Engineering and Technology (IJWET)
