Extension Request and Thesis Progress Report
This year my studies concerned the improvement of the entire work that has been developed during the previous period of Ph.D activity. For that it concerns the parallel image processing library I defined an optimization strategy of the I/O operations aimed to exploit the underlying architecture, and in particular parallel file systems (TC1406). For that it regards the parallel distributed image processing objects developed last year, I improved them with the definition of a policy to extend the provided image processing operations; it is aimed to enable a user to add its own image processing applications to the ones already provided. Moreover, I developed a Grid service based approach, for the use of the parallel library in a Grid environment. With respect to the Corba solution, this approach is more dynamic since it permits the use of dynamically selected computational resources and it is fully Grid-enabled. A paper describing this approch has been submitted to a conference (GS06). Finally I developed a medical imaging application in collaboration with the Institute of Biomedical Technologies, ITB-CNR of Milan. The results obtained a e summarized in a paper submitted for pubblication (TMA06).
However for the prepapration of my Ph.D. thesis, I feel the need of performing some further experiments and better formalize the obtained results in order to emphasize the original contributions of my research. Since for my personal matters, I was not able to do it as I would like, I prefer to extend my Ph.D studies for a further year.

Progress Report
During the second year of my Ph.D. I focused my
studies on aspects that are important issues in the development of
optimized dynamic parallel image processing objects.
For this reason I improved the interaction between the parallel image
processing components and the infrastructure in order to minimize the overhead
related with data movements, I applied an optimization policy to the dynamic
component concatenation obtained through an extention of the default parallelizion policy defined during the
development of the library. I also defined a simple to use component
interface, to hide the complexity of parallel and distributed
environments. Actually I'm studing for the definition of non-functional interfaces, and
performance contracts, in order to outline a scheduling component policy,
aimed to the selection of the suitable resources and to obtain a further optimization
of the dynamic component concatenation.
I also acted as a reviewer for ParCo2005, PDP2005.
- 2004 Ph.D. Thesis Prosal
This year I was mainly devoted to acquire competences in different fields related with my Ph.D. activity. First of all I attended different courses to study in
detail Computer Science sectors and improve my knowledges; after I investigated
others fields such as, Image Processing, Biomedical imaging, Distributed environment, Computational Grids.
I achieved different goals in my research activity, for more detail read my Ph.D. Thesis Prosal
Furthermore I acted as a reviewer for Euromicro PDP 2004, HiPC 2004, EuroPar 2004.
Presently I'm working on the development a parallel version of an algorithm to deblur in 3D SPECT imaging, in order to the correct a collimatori blur.
