BARBARA CATANIA - CURRICULUM VITAE
Barbara Catania is Associate Professor at DIBRIS - Department of Informatics, BioEngineering, Robotics, and Systems Engineering of the University of Genoa, Italy (formerly, DISI - Department of Computer and Information Sciences) since 2004. She is the head, together with Giovanna Guerrini, of the Database and Information Systems Group. From April 1999 until April 2004, she has been an assistant professor at the same department. In 1993, she received the MS degree in Information Sciences, cum laude, from the University of Genoa. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Milan, in 1998. From August 1993 to January 1994, she has been Visiting Researcher at the European Computer-Industry Research Center of Bull, ICL, and Siemens in Munich, Germany, where she collaborated to the ESPRIT project IDEA, sponsored by the European Economic Community. In July 2002 and January-February 2003 she has been Visiting Researcher at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where she collaborated with local research groups in the context of indexing and query processing research area. In March 2004, she has been visiting the Universite’ Paul Cezanne Aix-Marseille III, France, where she collaborated with local research groups in the context of spatial data management.
The main research interests of Barbara Catania are related to various aspects of data management systems including: indexing and optimization for advanced models and applications, approximate query processing, geo-spatial data management, pattern management and data mining, access control. On these topics, Barbara Catania has published more than 70 papers in refereed journals and in proceedings of international conferences and symposia. Barbara Catania is also a co-author of the books ``Indexing Techniques for Advanced Database Systems" 1997 (Kluwer Academic Publishers), ``Intelligent Database Systems" 2001 (Addison Wesley), ``Introduction to Database Systems" 2005 (McGraw-Hill Education, Singapore), ``Sistemi di Gestione Dati - Concetti e Architetture'' 2006 (in italian, Citta'StudiEdizioni,UTET Universita'- De Agostini, Italy).
Barbara Catania has been involved as technical coordinator for the University of Milano in the following EU projects: CONCERTO - Conceptual indexing, querying and retrieval of digital documents (ESPRIT P29159, years 1998-2000); PANDA - Patterns for Next-Generation Database Systems (IST-2001-33058, years 2002-2004). She has also been involved in the following national projects: PRIN 2000 SPADA - Representation and Processing of Spatial Data in Geographic Information Systems (years 2001-2002); CLICKWORLD - Innovative Techniques for Web Proactive Personalization, industrial research project (MIUR - L.488/92), years 2002-2003; PRIN 2003 SPADA@WEB - WEB-based management and representation of spatial and geographic data.
Barbara Catania has given several presentations in various national and international universities (including National University of Singapore, Universite’ Paul Cezanne Aix-Marseille III, France) and tutorials in international conferences (DASFAA’05-International Conference on Database Systems for Advanced Applications and IIWAS’01-International Conference on Information Integration and Web Based Applications & Services). She has also given several courses to industries and public bodies, concerning database system technologies. Barbara Catania supervised and is currently supervising several PhD thesis, on topics related to her research interests. She has been external refereee for national and international PhD thesis (including National University of Singapore).
