Title Multiscale Topological Analysis for Scientific Data Exploration

Abstract Topological analysis of scalar fields is emerging as a fundamental tool for extracting intrinsic geometric features present in scientific data. In this presentation I will discuss multiscale techniques based on a Morse theoretical characterization of topology and simplification strategies based on cancellation of critical points for Morse Complexes, Morse-Smale Complexes, and Contour Trees. For the case of the Contour Tree I will provide complete details for a multi-resolution data structure allowing progressive adaptive traversal with guaranteed correctness of the topological information extracted. The combination hierarchical layout allows for progressive rendering amortized across several frames. The construction of this multi-resolution model is only slightly more expensive than the standard one, but introduces far greater flexibility when filtering topology. I will perform a live demonstration of the approach with a simple visualization tool with linked views coordinating the presentation of topology with traditional visualization techniques.
