| Abstract |
The generation of 3D content for virtual environments can be a tedious process which consumes many hours and requires a great deal of human resources. Procedural methods provide a possible alternative, allowing the creation of a many different models from a small set of parameters. Unfortunately, choosing parameters to generate the desired variation or a specific result is not.
This is particularly evident for many procedural terrain generation, where one is either forced to model real terrain or to accept some natural-looking proxy which doesn't quite match what you want. Alternatively, one can forgo the use of parameters and instead infer these from some kind of "user sketch". Sketching has a long history as a means of specifying high-level features in 2D representations, and has already been adapted to serve as a 3D modeling interface.
In this talk I discuss past and present work that we have undertaken on the use of sketching interfaces as a means of controlling the procedural generation of terrains and cities.
I will describe our first attempts at terrain specification, before briefly covering some of the new work our group has done in this area. Finally, I will present some discussion and preliminary results from work we are currently completing on city generation.
