Title SHRO Virtual Reality Program

Abstract The Virtual Reality (VR) term typically refers to an advanced interactive 3D simulation and it can be considered the evolution of present communication interfaces whose ultimate goal is a full interactive immersion of the user. In the last ten years, high performance video cards, enhanced LCD displays, and object-oriented programming made possible a huge development of VR in different applications such as learning, training simulations and research. Interestingly, this technology has been modified also for child/adult use in clinical settings. Today, the use of VR for pain distraction during acute medical interventions (i.e. chemotherapy, wound care) is under evaluation. In order to further explore the application of VR in the medical field, we launched our VR program called eHealth. This program focuses specifically on the intersection of medical informatics, public health, communication and eLearning/education, with the goal of improving health care through the latest information and communication technology. One important aspect of S.H.R.O.’s eHealth Program is Digi S Lab, a Web 3.0 Virtual World Technology (VWT) project. This project was developed to take advantage of Web 3.0, which encourages a high level of social networking, collaboration, and participation among its users. With this technology, visitors (represented by “avatars” or computer representation of the user as textual, two-dimensional and three-dimensional models) can enter and fully interact with a 3-D virtual world. In 2008, we developed and launched a 3-D island called Biomedicine Research Lab (Figure 1), located on Second Life virtual reality platform. This 3-D environment can host virtual meetings, eLearning for students and scientists using custom tools developed by S.H.R.O. Some active projects are the following: (1) to use VWT in post traumatic stress disorder treatment for returning war veterans; (2) to use VWT as interventional tool to improve cancer patient quality of life; and (3) to develop Virtual Reality Technologies for Weight Control.
