Abstract The seminar will provide an overview of the research projects of the e-Markets Group (Faculty of Information Technology, University of Technology, Sydney). Fully automated trading is virtually unheard today. It involves the maintenance of effective business relationships, and the process includes the identification of the needs, product and supplier brokering, offer-exchange, contract negotiation and subsequent execution. The mission of the group is to facilitate the achievement of fully automated trading in electronic markets through research and development of the major technological components of complete, immersive and secure electronic trading technologies. Virtual insitutions played a central role in the research approach. The term virtual institution refers to a regulatory framework that is designed to accommodate both human and software players interacting engaged in rich dialogues. They interact in a language that can represent, talk about and propose modifications to agreements, to relationships and to behavioural norms. They use information from the interaction and from outside sources. All of these takes place in an institution with a 3D representation that is capable of regulating the interaction between players, that will then lead to the evolution of the institution itself
