Dr. Klaus R. Dittrich holds the chair for information systems at the Department of Information Technology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, and heads the Database Technology Research Group at this place (see http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/groups/dbtg/dbtg.html for more information). Since many years, he has taught and conducted research in various areas of database systems and their applications, partly in cooperation with industry and within international settings like ESPRIT, and he has also consulted with many industries and government. In particular, he has followed the development of object-oriented technologies from their inception, and has influenced the area of object databases with own contributions. He coorganized the first-ever ooDBMS-Workshops in 1986 and 1988, and has been a co-author of the "Object-oriented Database Manifesto" in 1989. Other areas of research interest include active database systems, federated database systems, database architecture, and the "intersection" of database technology and software engineering. He has published widely, and has lectured and conducted professional seminars in some 25 countries all over the world. As a visiting scientist, he has been invited to IBM Almaden Research Center, Hewlett-Packard Laboratories, Stanford University and the University of Aalborg/Denmark. He is currently the secretary of the VLDB Endowment, and has been elected as a member of the IEEE Distinguished Visitor Program Europe for the next three years. He is also editor of three major journals. |

Isabella Merlo received a MS Degree in Computer Science (with honours) at the University of Genova in 1996. Since November 1996, she is enrolled in a PhD program, under the supervision of Prof. Elisa Bertino, in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences of the University of Genova as a member of the Databases and Information Systems Group. Her current research interests include object-oriented, active and temporal databases, data models for management of semi-structured data. She was one of the organizers of the ECOOP'99 Workshop on Object-Oriented Databases. |
